Driving to the End of the Word

Every once in a while a book comes along that
surprises me. When I came across first-time author Mark McMahon’s
autobiographical book, Driving to the End of the World, I did not know
what to expect. From the very first words, “I’m gonna die!” I was
completely spellbound. Filled with adventure, comedy and romance this
page-turning wonder gracefully interweaves elements of tragedy and
discovery with a self-deprecating humor that frequently had me laughing
out loud. Mark’s story begins with an epiphany. “My father had just died.
I was driving home shortly after and it struck me. I’m going to die too.”
With his newfound sense of mortality, Mark decided to sell his thriving
dental practice, buy a used pick-up truck that he named “Baby Blue” and
begin a six-month driving journey from his home in Tucson, Arizona to the
“end of the world” in Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina. “I couldn’t worry about
what anyone else thinks,” McMahon stated, “I had to get on with my life
and do what I wanted to do. For too long I had put my passions aside
because following those dreams didn’t seem sensible. It was not until that
moment in the car when I realized that I couldn’t let my life slip away
without ever truly living it.” With a passion for travel and a love for
photography, Mark’s six-month journey would become a 2-year odyssey. With
the charisma of a master storyteller, Mark invites us into the passenger
seat of Baby Blue as he seeks out Tierra Del Fuego and in a real sense,
his very soul.... Review by Eric R. Osborn |
