It has been six years since my last fishing
trip in Saskatchewan so I had to wait a long time for this one!
For Skinnah and I the trip got off to
a rough start. You see, we decided to go to Bud's On
Broadway the night before for a quick beer which turned into a bit
of a blinder and we didn't end up back at dad's place until 1:30
am, give or take an hour due to blackout condition. When we
got the wakeup call from popsy at 3:55 Skinnah was on the couch
and I was face down on the carpet. The hangovers didn't
actually kick in until somewhere after La Ronge.
It was my first time fishing on Kelly Lake
and I must say that I was more than a little impressed. The
fishing was unbelievable, made even better by the discovery of
"Pike Alley" where the northerns were ferociously attacking
anything that was thrown at them. And the lake trout were
equally hungry, there were at least three occasions where Dad,
Skinnah and I had a "triple header", that is, all three of us with
fish on at the same time. There were so many double headers
that we didn't bother counting.
The participants this year were Tom Laxdal,
Brian Ford, Don Gustafson, Colby Gustafson, Jason Peesker, Peter
Olson and me. Tom was kind enough to donate some prizes for
the daily fisherman king awards. The winners were Peter,
Skinnah and Colby, who won a fantastic new tackle box with his
monstrous trout.
Other award winners were:
Tom - Best Fish Fry for his delicious
butter pike
Colby - Best Throwing Arm for chucking Skinnah's tackle box into
the river
Skinnah - Soggiest Socks award for his impressive bootfull count
Brian - Pyrotechnics Award for his petroleum fueled campfire
ignition techniques
Don - Knot Master award for losing a stringer of trout from a
sketchy tie up job
Peter - Monster Slough Shark award for his 19 pound pike
Me - Northern Limey Award for my improvised beverage "Lime Rind Tea"
Thanks to all for putting together such a
fantastic and memorable trip. I can't wait until next year!
