Fishing Trip 2009...at Fishing Lake?

This was to be the first year in many years that I was to miss a fishing trip. Last year I decided to make the June fishing trip journey to Saskatchewan every two years instead of yearly. But in a fortunate occurrence of schedule rigging by several parties, the fishing trip was moved to Fishing Lake the same weekend that Marty, Curtis and I were there. We were also joined by an army of Laxdals, in fact, one day on the beach there was five Marni look-alikes all lined up and lounging in front of the Ford cabin!

I call it a fishing trip, but it was definitely the lowest intensity fishing trip we’ve ever had. Normally, when you’re camped out in the bush with nothing but trees, rock, and water for miles around, it’s easy to stay focused on the slaughter of marine creatures. Fishing near civilization presents a whole host of distractions including, but not limited to, refrigerated beer, showers, golf courses, fresh baking in Ford’s kitchen, ATV rides and retail liquor outlets. I admit we happily succumbed to all of these distractions, but did manage to get a few hours of fishing in. The fishery at Fishing Lake is much improved over previous years, in fact, we caught more than enough walleye and pike in an afternoon for a big fish fry – a feat that would have been nearly impossible years ago. I’m not too modest so have no trouble claiming the master fisherman prize for the Saturday contest. I’d like to credit my superior fishing skills, but I think it had more to do with knowing the exact location of where we’ve been launching spuds into the lake from dad’s potato cannon for years – does wonders for the baitfish. The Sunday session was won by one of the Marnis….she caught a lovely walleye that was ruthlessly photographed with pretty much anyone passing by on the beach. I’m also proud to say that my little boy Magnus even caught a fish…though I think Brian may have hooked it and passed his rod, but nevertheless, it counts as his first fishing trip fish! As usual, Tom lined up a great assortment of prizes and everybody left happy, well fed and much, much less filthy than normal.
