Fraser Island is one of the destination on
every backpacker's itinerary and for good reason. It is an
island made completely of sand and home to rainforests, freshwater
creeks and lakes, wild dingoes, a 75 mile beach, huge sand dunes,
and breathtaking lookout points.
There are only three ways you can visit Fraser
Island. The first is to rent a 4WD vehicle, get the
necessary permits and go over on your own. This is a good
option if you are a small group of people with your own camping
gear and lots of time. It also helps if you have experience
with 4WD vehicles as the driving can be tricky. It is
possible to stay at one of the few resorts on the island, which
are not too flash but decent. Or you can camp at one of the
public campsites or even just on the beach.
The second option which the tour companies
offer is a self drive rental with a group of 10 people. They
basically match you up with nine others, give you lessons on the
vehicle, load you up with camping gear, and off you go. The
group must then buy all the food and booze they need before
departing as the shops on Fraser have very limited and expensive
supplies. This is a good option if you want to go for a
party as it's normally younger people having a good time.
But the vehicles we saw seemed to be very cramped and didn't look
too comfortable.
The last option is an organised tour and this
is the one we chose. There are lots of companies that offer
these so you can choose from budget to relative luxury, it all
depends what you want. We were quite happy with this as the
guide had a great itinerary and was able to give a lot of history
of the island.
If you are traveling down the east coast of
Australia, don't miss it.
