As one of the most visited countries in the world, Spain obviously
has a lot to offer. Besides the beautiful language, it
also offers a nice climate, great food, and cheap wine.
Our Spanish travels are limited to a single weekend trip to
Barcelona, but after the superb time we had there there will
definitely be more trips to come.
Barcelona
We took my youngest
brother Curtis and his girlfriend Carrie on a weekend get away
to Barcelona during their visit with us in the
Netherlands. We were also joined by the omnipotent Toddy
Van Hees, which certainly added to the enjoyment! The city
was incredible - especially the architecture by Antonio Gaudi.
His partially completed cathedral named Sagrada Familia is one
of the most impressive structures we have ever seen in our
lives.
Things to Know
The taxi ride from the
airport to central Barcelona was 18 euros. We
stayed in the old port area of Barceloneta which was an ideal
location as it was close to the beach and the main tourist strip
called La Rambla. We got around to see the sights by
taking the standard double decker tourist bus which was pretty
good value at 18 euro each for a two day unlimited pass.
The busses take you by all the main tourist sights and you can
hop on and off at your pleasure.
Where to Eat
There are restaurants
everywhere so finding a good one shouldn't be too hard. We
ate at tapas bars, waffle stands, harbourside restaurants, and
local cafes - all were good. Stick with the seafood as the
paellas (Spanish rice and seafood specialty) are delicious!
Things to See and Do
In the two days we
were there we did the following things:
- spent a few hours
admiring the Sagrada Familia cathedral
- rode the tourist busses around
- walked up and down La Ramba checking out the buskers, human
statues and hustlers
- hit a small, brilliant nightclub (Plastique) until 3 am.
- went for freezing cold dip in the ocean
- had a boogie in a salsa bar (Cucina Italia) after being denied
access to the casino (need your passport to get in)
