LUIZ DE MEDEIROS CABRINHA
Notes from Kris
This poem by Ana’s grandfather Luiz de Medeiros Cabrinha was written in 1951 in a folk style very popular across the Portuguese world, used to commemorate local tragedies, and often distributed as pamphlets. These served as news, memorials, and communal memories all at once. I found the poet’s apology in the final stanza, and his expression of humility a little odd, but then I leaned this was a convention of that poetic tradition. There is also limited use of metaphors; it is written flatly and honestly, more as testament to the tragedy, like a witness statement, and it is also written in very plain Portuguese, which gives it so much force. A rhyming pattern is maintained in each stanza, with the first two lines rhyming, the fourth and fifth, then the third and sixth. The English translation does not attempt to follow this rhyming pattern.
